Shear Genius Season 3 premiered yesterday and saw one of the twelve stylists get eliminated. Joey Scandizzo, a stylist from Melbourne, Australia had to say goodbye on the very first episode of Shear Genius after he lost out to other stylists during the elimination challenge.

Shear Genius returned to Bravo for its third season and looked fresh and exciting. The changes were apparent from the start, with a new host – Camila Alves, new judges, and of course, new contestants. The fact that the show has gone international and picked up cutting edge stylists from every part of the world make it more fierce and challenging.

In the premier episode of Shear Genius 3, host Camila Alves greeted the 12 stylists who had gathered at Los Angeles and introduced them to new judge Jonathan Antin, and their mentor Orlando Pita. The guest judge was Monica Wise, creator and designer for LSpace Swimwear.

The challenges are just like the previous seasons, with two per episode, a Short Cut and an Elimination challenge. The elimination challenge for the premier episode of season 3 required the stylists to come up with a hairstyle that could go with swimwear.

The stylists had to make sure that their styles covered the top body portion of the models as they were supposed to wear only their bottoms. This challenge was a bit tough since none of these models had enough hair to completely cover themselves and that made the elimination challenge very fierce.

Joey Scandizzo’s style appeared disconnected as compared to that of other stylists and hence he was eliminated. Joey is a popular stylist from Australia who has made a name for himself by directing hair for the Perth Fashion Festival, styling hair for “Precinct and Cream.”

He was recently honoured as one of four finalists at this years’ prestigious Hair Expo Australian Hairdresser of the Year Awards. Joey is currently the artistic director and part owner of Rokk Ebony salon and has won accolades at several cutting competitions including Hair Expo, Wella Trend Visions and Star Search Collections.

With Joey Scandizzo eliminated, there are eleven stylists who will fight for the ultimate prize of $100,000. Stay tuned to all the updates from Shear Genius Season 3 by following Bravo’s website.

Dining For Change, a very successful charitable outreach program for the beauty industry, is scheduled to be held in March 2010. The Professional Beauty Association (PBA) and the National Cosmetology Association (NCA) have recently announced this event which is held twice a year.

Dining For Change invites beauty professionals to network, share, enjoy each other’s company over a meal and raise money for a good cause. This grassroots philanthropy effort makes fundraising easy on a local level and allows participants to make a difference for those impacted by cancer, domestic violence and natural disasters. The first Dining for Change initiative had successfully raised $100,000 during March and October 2009, where beauty professionals across the country gathered at hundreds of dinners on a local level.

Getting involved with Dining For Change is easy! The registration process along with the rules for donations and other terms & conditions can be found on NCA’s website.

Many beauty professionals and their colleagues have successfully hosted Dining For Change events and so can you! As a host, you decide on the kind of event (formal / informal dinner), number of invited guests, location and suggested charitable donation by each guest. Gatherings can vary from ultra casual to sophisticated chic – it’s up to you! Each guest makes a voluntary donation which is then combined with the donations of others across the country to elevate the collective giving of all.

Like last year, NCA is inviting beauty professionals to:
• Host a get together with your fellow professionals, co-workers, business associates and/or clients
• Encourage others to host their own get togethers as part of a national network of professionals
• Promote your support of Dining For Change and the industry related charities it benefits
• Support the good work of “Look Good…Feel Better” programs for cancer patients and the Salons Against Domestic Abuse Fund’s CUT IT OUT program and the NCA Disaster Relief Fund.

PBA – NCA’s Dining For Change is a grassroots fundraising initiative based on a new and growing model of localized charitable work called ‘giving circles’ – groups of individuals networked with other small groups to make a difference. All the Dining For Change contributions go to support the work of Look Good…Feel Better, CUT IT OUT, and the PBA – NCA Disaster Relief Fund. So you end up working for three worthy causes by organizing an event like this.

Be the change that you want to see in our world. Spread the word amongst beauty professionals to be a Dining For Change host in March. To get started, visit www.ncacares.org/diningforchange

Cosmetology education is an interesting field that promises a great career. Whether you are a student or a stylist, you need to keep yourself updated with the latest trends and techniques in the hair & beauty industry to become a better cosmetologist.

There are different branches in which cosmetology education is imparted. After the basic training, one can specialize to become a Stylist, Barber, Colorist, Manicurist, Nail Technician, etc. You can use your creative skills and talents in cosmetology like no other profession.

Many people select careers that allow them to achieve global recognition. If you are passionate about hair and beauty, then this industry will allow you to reach for the stars. Cosmetology is fun and a creative profession that will take you virtually anywhere.

There are many stylists in this industry that started with basic cosmetology education and went on to achieve massive appreciation for their work. Ivan Zoot is the world’s fastest haircutter who has three amazing world records to his credit. He is popularly known as ClipperGuy and has been a strong advocate of clipper cutting.

It’s worth noting that cosmetology education does not only make better barbers and stylists who work in salons, but also offers an opportunity to work with red carpet celebrities. Neeko is one such stylist who is known throughout the world as the celebrity stylist of choice for great stars like Halle Berry, Charlize Theron, Tyra Banks and many more.

To be a part of the hair industry is a great feeling for any stylist and to be appreciated for their efforts, one has to start with cosmetology education. It lays the basic foundation which can be built up with regular efforts.

The best part is that cosmetologists have strong employment opportunities across the world. While some choose to work as Freelance stylists, many even go into business for themselves. Lady GaGa’s hairstyles are truly inspirational. Every time you see the Poker Face star, she simply amazes you with her extreme fashion and wonderful hairstyles.

After sporting Yellow hair at the beginning of the year, Lady GaGa changed her hairstyle in just two weeks. She was spotted at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas with a weird hairstyle. She never fails to make people’s eyes go wide with surprise.

Lady GaGa showed off a spray of hair atop her head, in the shape of a wide-brim sunhat. And it’s not just any kind of hat; it’s actually made of her signature platinum hair!

If you see her from a distance you’ll think she is sporting a wide-brim hat that tips on one side of her head. However, it was a very well executed celebrity hairstyle. It was styled like a spiky hat, with the portions evenly distributed around her head.

One can imagine how much hair gel and cream her stylist must have used for Lady GaGa’s hat hair. Kudos to her stylists for such an innovative celebrity hairstyle as it’s difficult to make hair stand out like that.

Lady GaGa’s hairstyles and her outfits have been pretty ridiculous at times. She was sporting a hairstyle that looked like a massive dome a few months ago. Professional hair shears were used to cut her hair then and give them an even look. However her hat hair look required more styling than hair cutting.

I think Lady GaGa’s hat hair is her most avant-garde headgear to date. She not only displayed a creative style but also gave a new meaning to hat hair. We’ve already seen her ditch those yellow locks in less than two weeks and can’t wait to see what the Paparazzi singer comes up with next!
